  Black Belts

Martin Matthews - 3rd Dan

My initial reason for starting to learn karate was because of a serious bullying problem, which had to be brought to a stop. I first started training with a Black Belt though after a while left because it did not suit my needs. I then joined another club where my older brother was being taught, under the instruction of Sensei Harvey Smith.

I continued to train under Sensei Smith until I reached 3rd kyu, but unfortunately the training became unsuitable, so I stopped for a bit whilst looking around for another club. Luckily, I came across a club whose chief instructor was Sensei Tony Conroy. Sensei Conroy allows all styles to train at his club, which helps his students to gain knowledge of other forms of the martial art.

I have now been graded to black belt (2nd  Dan), and I am training hard for my 3rd  dan, which I intend to take soon, and will I hope, eventually lead me to the instructing side of karate.

My other instructor, Sensei Limmage, is equally as strict and his methods sometimes unorthodox, but both instructors have the same objective of improving and developing their students as quickly as possible.

To want to become a black belt one must be prepared to train hard, and accept the discipline that is required with karate. Not only will Karate improve your confidence, stamina, endurance and strength, it also introduces you to new people and new friends.

I have been taught never to go out expecting trouble, but if a problem develops, then I believe, that one’s Karate training will help in controlling and containing that situation.
