I
started Wado Ryu karate in 1982 under the Higashi Kai. My first
instructors were Sensei Elza Mashiro and Sensei Keith Clash. My training
back then was not as often as it could have been and in 1988, still
training in Wado Ryu I moved to a
Newport
club.
Following
a break in training, having reached 7th kyu in Wado Ryu
karate, I switched to Shotokan under the instruction of Sensei Colin
Jenkins (Association of Karate and Allied Disciplines). Under his
instruction I attained 1st kyu.
Not
being completely happy with AKAD, I again switched the group I trained
with. This time it was to train under Sensei Reede Brown of Kyokai
Shotokan Karate. Here I was made welcome and the training suited me. I
achieved my 1st Dan in December of 2002.
Shortly
after this, due to work commitments, the club closed. For the next seven
years I trained with several instructors in the
Cardiff
area, trying to find one which suited. These included Sensei Chiko
Mbakwe, Nikki Cole & James Masterman (WSKU), Bernard
Downey
(Traditional Karate) and Stuart Creedon & Dave Richards (AKAD). I
still got together with Reede Brown to train when ever possible.
In
October 2009 Sensei Reede Brown re-established Kyokai Shotokan Karate
and I am now training hard once again in a place that I enjoy.
