Darren Wade - 2nd Dan

I was first introduced to karate when I attended a few lessons of Kyokushinkai with my older brother, when I was about 11 years old. At the time I decided that it wasn’t for me.

In 1988 I was starting at Aston University in Birmingham, and decided to give Karate another go. I trained in Shotokan twice weekly for 3 hours under sensei Roger Timmins and sensei Gary Truman, and thoroughly enjoyed it. I found that karate helped with my fitness and confidence. Focusing on training also helped with my studies. I gained my 1st Dan in 1996 under sensei Timmins, and continued to travel from Leicester to Birmingham to train.

I took a break from karate from 2007 to 2011 to concentrate on family and work commitments. By 2011 I returned to karate, with Conroy karate and the Birstall karate club. I attended a session and liked the discipline and friendliness of the club. I gained my 2nd Dan in 2015, with thanks to instruction from sensei Ginny Beresford and sensei Tony Conroy.

My son has now tried his first training sessions and is keen to do more. I hope we can train together in years to come, and that he gets as much from karate as I have.
